On April 26, the Valley City State University’s (VCSU) tennis club had their annual banquet. The team is made up of seven players, and are led by Coach Erik Kringle. The VCSU tennis club had a very successful season and ended up taking 4th place at Regionals going up against some very stiff competition such as the University of Minnesota.

At the banquet many awards were giving out: Most Dedicated Women—Paige Fettig, Most Dedicated Male—Kurt Brown (Senior), Most Improved Male—Kasey Dilbeck (Freshmen), Most Improved Female—Strella Navalta (Sophomore), Spirit Award—Alex Conlon (Junior), MVP Women—Paige Fettig (Freshmen), Most Valuable Player Male—Alex Conlon & Stephen Brown.

The final award of the night were given out to two special players that have been with this program for four years. This award is called the “Senior Award,” and it is only given to those players that stick out, and have been playing for 4 years while attending VCSU. These two great players are Kurt Brown and Erika Lutjens.

Brown said his “favorite memory is of a couple of the indoor practices this last season where everyone on the team worked hard, built each other up, and had fun.”

After the banquet I had an opportunity to catch up with these two seniors and discuss their plans after graduation. Brown majors in Fisheries and Wild life science and hopes to work for the National Park Service, once school is done this spring. Lutjens will be getting her degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management, and a minor in Human Resources. She plans on moving to Fargo, North Dakota and finding a job at a company that is hiring in the Human Resources Department.

Lutjens said her favorite memory is “junior year the team made it to Nationals and went to Surprise, Arizona. We were the smallest tennis team to ever make it to Nationals and we placed second to last. It was a great experience that created lots of memories and I would have loved to have experienced it again.”

This sums up the coverage of the Valley City State University’s club tennis team banquet. Come out and support them next fall at their home tournament or any of the other tournaments through the year.
