The Valley City State University Vikings football team defeated the University of Jamestown Jimmies, Saturday Aug. 29, keeping the Paint Bucket at VCSU for the third time in a row. The Vikings beat the Jimmies 41-31 during this seasons most recent rivalry match up. Along with the win, Viking’s Junior quarterback, Kurtis Walls set two new school records.
Walls broke both the record for most passing yards in one game (512) and most completions (30). “Breaking school records is always fun and feels great, but it is never the motive… the feeling of walking off the field with a win is what I play for,” Walls exclaimed.
Approaching half time, the Vikings only held a short lead over the Jimmies, 14-12, scoring a touchdown just before the time of the first half expired. The Vikings then dominated the third quarter adding two more touchdowns, both 11- yard passes from Walls, to both wide receivers Josh Tovar and DJ Edwards. During the fourth quarter, the Jimmies started to close up the gap and got into Viking territory, until Vikings Beau Winchester caught an interception confirming the win for the Vikings. “We played together as a team, and played with high and consistent effort throughout all four quarters,” Tovar declared.
Next up, the Vikings will take on the Mayville State University Comets, Saturday Sep. 5, at Jerome Berg Field in Mayville, ND. “Each week is going to be a challenge, and we will take it one game at a time.” Walls stated.
